This article will assist users with basic WiFi troubleshooting tips for connecting student iPads at home. There can be a variety of reasons that an iPad cannot connect to WiFi. Listed below are the most common reasons and solutions.

Where to Start


Did you power the iPad off and on again?

  • Hold down the power button on the top of the iPad for approximately 7 seconds.
  • Swipe the Slide to Power Off bar to the right.  Wait for the iPad to fully power down.
  • Once powered down, hold the power button for approximately 3 seconds to start up the iPad.


Forget your network and reconnect

  • Open up the Settings app.
  • Tap Wi-Fi.
  • Tap on the name of your home network.
  • Tap Forget this network.
  • Reconnect to your home network.

Reset your Network settings on the iPad.  (This will cause the iPad to clear out everything it knows, so you'll want to have your home network password handy.  Go to Wi-Fi settings and connect to your network.)

  • Open up the Settings app.
  • Tap General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
  • Reconnect to your home network after the device reboots.

Is your wireless signal strength too low? Are all wireless bars showing?

  • Move closer to your router
  • Re-locate your router to a more centralized location

Have you ever connected to your home network?  Were any changes made on your home network recently?

  • Try undoing any recent changes to see if the iPad works again

Are parental controls enabled on your router?

  • They will have to be disabled or if possible, exempt the iPad from them
  • Since each router manufacturer is different, you will need to check the owner's manual of your router for direction on changing parental controls

Does your router require authentication before a successful connection can be made?

  • This must be disabled, or if possible, exempt the iPad from having to authenticate


Make sure the date and time are correct.

  • Open up the Settings app.
  • Tap General > Date & Time.
  • If Set Automatically is toggled on (green), then you need to toggle it off (gray).
  • Manually set the correct time.
  • Verify that the internet works.
  • Toggle Set Automatically back on (green).

Javascript must be turned on

  • Open up the Settings app.
  • Tap Safari > Advanced.
  • Verify Javascript is toggled on (green).

Are you able to get on in a different location?

  • Friend's or family's house?
  • Public Wi-Fi is NOT guaranteed to work
